Underwriting
Assessing whether to take on a risk, on what terms, and recording why that conclusion was reached.
Underwriting is the judgement at the centre of lending: given what is known about this applicant, do we accept, decline, or accept with different terms. It combines hard rules, scoring, and human discretion in proportions that vary by product.
Automation rarely removes the underwriter. What it removes is the assembly work — gathering documents, rekeying figures, chasing a missing check — so that the judgement is made on a complete case rather than a partial one.
