Sanctions screening
Checking a person or company against official lists of parties that a business is prohibited from dealing with.
Sanctions lists are published by governments and international bodies, and dealing with a listed party is a criminal matter rather than a commercial risk. Screening compares an applicant's details against those lists at onboarding and, usually, at intervals afterwards.
The hard part is matching. Names transliterate differently, dates of birth are missing, and a strict comparison produces false negatives while a loose one buries the team in false positives. A workable setup pairs sensible matching thresholds with a review queue where a human clears or confirms each hit — and records which.
